While the recommendations made by a high-powered committee
set up by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to tackle air and water pollution are
not new, his office wants to ensure that these are implemented and there is
accountability. For this, the Lt-Governor’s office has set up a
project-implementation unit (PIU).The Environment department is now busy
setting deadlines for both short and long-term measures. Once that is done, the
L-G has asked all departments concerned to chalk out budgetary plans, which
they are to submit to the PIU by September 1, sources at Raj Niwas said. The
committee set up by the L-G has recommended introducing Euro V and Euro VI
emission norms in Delhi, a suggestion that was also made in 2012 in the draft
Air Action Plan of the Congress government.
