The
Corporation faces a daunting challenge at managing plastic waste after a recent
High Court directive banned burning of solid waste and plastic in public
places. While it is a welcome relief for the general public who had been
suffering from toxic fumes, the local bodies will find it tough to manage waste
without a sound waste management system. Health standing committee chairman of
the Corporation K Sreekumar said the Corporation welcomed the decision and
would give strict instructions to officials not to burn waste in public.
However, sanitation workers who are engaged in
keeping the city clean were not provided with another alternative, said a
health official.
