Treating toxics: Countdown begins on Berkeley Pit Water

If there’s one thing industry, the Environmental Protection Agency, the state and the community can agree on, it’s that it’s time to start investigating the Horseshoe Bend Water Treatment Plant.Built from 2002 to 2003 in the former McQueen neighborhood on Montana Resources’ property, the plant is all that stands to protect Silver Bow Creek from the toxic water in the Berkeley Pit, a former open-pit copper mine. The fear that the plant will not be ready to pump and treat pit water by the projected 2023 deadline “is pretty generic” within the community, said Dave Williams, president of the Citizens Technical Environmental Committee.
