The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has
been ordered by the state government to conduct a “spot–inspection” on all the
cement factories in the East Jaintia Hills District for alleged cause of
environmental degradation and if found guilty then the factories will be
subjected to immediate closures. The order came as a result of a petition
submitted by the Khasi Students’ Union – Narpuh Circle (KSU–NC) seeking
government intervention on the alleged violation against the laid down norms by
five cement companies leading to serious environmental degradation in the
region. Speaking to the reporters after the meeting with the NGO, the State
Forest and Environment Minister said, “The chairman of the MSPCB has been
directed to undertake a spot inspection on all the cement factories operating
in Narpuh Elaka of the district.”
