Source: Financial World , Chandigarh, Date: , 2009

The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) has issued directions to all nursing homes, clinics and hospitals , directing them to ensure that the storage time for bio-medical waste should be reduced to 24 hours. Instructions have been issued following the directions from the Ministry of Environment in this regard. As per the instructions, it has been stated that the storage time of bio-medical waste up to 48 hours may not be right for hot and humid climate areas, so the concerned SPCB/PCC should ensure either to reduce the time to 24 hours or store such waste in cold containers till they were transported to common facility on a case-to-case basis. Officials of the CPCC said, “This is a follow-up action on the recommendations contained in the 184th report of the committee on Subordinate Legislation, Rajya Sabha, regarding the management and handling of The Bio-Medicals Waste (Management & Handling ) Rules, 1998.
