Source: The Times of India, Date: , 2016

New Delhi, Dec 16, 2016 : With plastic bags being used with impunity in the city, the administration has evidently failed to implement the ban on plastic bags. But sources in the MC said the failure is deliberate. According to them, the civic body was instructed by the ruling SAD-BJP government to delay action against those who violated the ban in view of the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections. This has effectively frozen the campaign to ban plastic bags and thermocol, which have a severely detrimental effect on the environment. It started with the state government ordering a complete ban on plastic handbags and thermocol in the state from April 1, 2016 citing environmental and health hazards. In January, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued show cause notices to the Punjab and Haryana governments, asking them to explain why plastic carry bags should not be completely banned in both states.
