The earth is
reeling under enormous pressure of environmental degradation. Every
human action be it pollution, deforestation,
poaching, mining, indiscriminate
urbanization
or
illegal encroachments is unleashing myriad of environmental and ecological challenges.
As an attempt to provide a visual understanding on some of these contemporary ecological challenges and foster a sense of responsibility among the youth, Toxics Link organized a two day travelling festival in Mira
Model School, Janakpuri, New Delhi on
2-3 Sep 2013. The traveling film festival was a part of ‘Quotes From the Earth’ an exploration of films on environment to depict some of the stark environmental challenges and catalyze debates on the environmental problems facing us today.
7 films were screened in three different sessions. The students included diverse groups ranging from class fourth to class twelfth. Some of the films shown were: Last words of a dying tree, Blue Goes Black, Tiger Dynasty, The Jungle Gang (Rhino), The Jungle Gang (Bear), My Home is Green, Reviving Faith.
The festival saw an overwhelming response from
the students and the documentaries served as a pertinent environmental education tool. More than 800
students participated in
the festival. Some very significant
questions were raised by the students on the issue of pesticides, poaching and climate change.
The students also
shared some of the initiatives
they can undertake as an endeavor to save the environment.
