National Conference on Toxic Chemicals Management: Availing Opportunities under Stockholm Convention

On 28th of
February, 2012 Toxics Link, New Delhi, organized a national conference on toxic
chemicals management at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The conference was one
of the first efforts of its kind in India to bring a range of scientists,
experts and stakeholders from across the nation (and even international
participants) to deliberate on the crucial issue of public health. While the
focus was broadly on the Persistent Organic Pollutants and the Stockholm
Convention, the key objective of the meeting was to delve into larger issues of
toxin management, societal risk assessment and find ways to address issues of
human health and environment at large.
The
conference endeavored to initiate dialogue process on toxic chemicals
management with key stakeholders and delve upon challenges/ opportunities;
deliberate on some of the outstanding issue in chemicals management –
stockpiles, obsolete substances, emission management, financing etc; critically
ponder over some of the alternative paradigm of development and growth.
