NGT seeks report from chief secretary on arsenic contamination

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Eastern Zone Bench, on Monday, directed the chief secretary to file a report on the arsenic situation in West Bengal. The NGT had earlier expressed concern after going through a report on arsenic contamination in Kolkata that appeared in The Times of India. Environment activist Subhas Datta had then been allowed to file a petition on the matter. In his petition, Datta had named the state PHE department, West Bengal Pollution Control Board, Central Ground Water Board and the state municipal affairs secretary as respondents but the bench insisted on Monday that the chief secretary should be the one to file a report on the situation.
