Bangladesh paint industry seeks 50ppm lead limit

The Bangladesh Paints Manufacturers Association (BPMA) and NGO, the Eco-Social Development Organization (ESDO), want the government to introduce a mandatory 50ppm on lead in paint by 2015, a more stringent requirement than the internationally used 90ppm.

Dr Shahriar Hossain, ESDO Bangladesh secretary general, told Chemical Watch that the decision to impose a more stringent mandatory requirement was taken jointly with the BPMA as we are close to achieving our target of lead-free paint in Bangladesh. After a long intervention and consultation with manufacturers, we have been able to convince them. From early 2013, seven leading companies have switched to lead free paint production.”
