The
Bangladesh Paints Manufacturers Association (BPMA) and NGO, the Eco-Social
Development Organization (ESDO), want the government to introduce a mandatory
50ppm on lead in paint by 2015, a more stringent requirement than the
internationally used 90ppm.
Dr Shahriar
Hossain, ESDO Bangladesh secretary general, told Chemical Watch that the
decision to impose a more stringent mandatory requirement was taken jointly
with the BPMA as we are close to achieving our target of lead-free paint in
Bangladesh. After a long intervention and consultation with manufacturers, we
have been able to convince them. From early 2013, seven leading companies have
switched to lead free paint production.”
