Sweden's Ericsson aims to minimise electronic waste

Source: BBC, Date: , 2014

These days, it is easy to walk into a store and buy the latest television, computer or smart phone. But have you ever wondered what happens to the old ones you throw out?

Well, they get added to the growing mountain of electronic waste or e-waste.

Most of it ends up in Asia's developing countries such as India and China where thousands of workers in scrap yards strip e-waste of valuable metals such as copper, iron and gold for recycling.

But those workers are also exposed to toxic chemicals and metals, which can make them sick.

The BBC's Leisha Chi spoke to Stephen Rodgers, the director of ecology affairs at Swedish telecommunications equipment-maker Ericsson, and asked who should tackle what has become a growing problem.
