In a significant step towards
protecting the environment of the ecologically fragile hill district of
Wayanad, the district administration has imposed a complete ban on use and sale
of plastic bags and disposable plastic and thermocol plates and plastic serving
glasses in the district from October 2 onwards. Also in another pro-environment
order issued just days before he demitted office on Monday, district collector
Keshvendra Kumar banned quarrying and mining activity in the picturesque and
geologically rare rock formations of Phantom Rock, Arattupara and Kolagappara
located in the Krishnagiri and Ambalavayal villages in the district.
