Ludhiana MC lacks nerve to punish makers of polythene bags

The municipal corporation (MC) has made tall claims in the past of removing polythene handbags from the city for improving the environment, but has failed to take action against manufacturers and traders of such bags. Earlier on October 19, the MC had a meeting with various associations of polythene handbags manufacturers and traders, wherein the officials gave a warning to manufacturers and traders to stop dealing in banned polythene bags by October 22, or else strict action would be taken against them. MC officials said in the meeting that polythene bags below 40-micron width were banned, as they choke the city's sewer system. They said the ban was also applicable to cancer-causing coloured polythene bags, in which food items were served to people.
