The municipal
corporation (MC) has made tall claims in the past of removing polythene
handbags from the city for improving the environment, but has failed to take
action against manufacturers and traders of such bags. Earlier on October 19,
the MC had a meeting with various associations of polythene handbags
manufacturers and traders, wherein the officials gave a warning to
manufacturers and traders to stop dealing in banned polythene bags by October
22, or else strict action would be taken against them. MC officials said in the
meeting that polythene bags below 40-micron width were banned, as they choke
the city's sewer system. They said the ban was also applicable to
cancer-causing coloured polythene bags, in which food items were served to
people.
