The
National Green Tribunal (NGT), Eastern Zone Bench, on Monday, directed the
chief secretary to file a report on the arsenic situation in West Bengal. The
NGT had earlier expressed concern after going through a report on arsenic
contamination in Kolkata that appeared in The Times of India. Environment
activist Subhas Datta had then been allowed to file a petition on the matter.
In his petition, Datta had named the state PHE department, West Bengal
Pollution Control Board, Central Ground Water Board and the state municipal
affairs secretary as respondents but the bench insisted on Monday that the
chief secretary should be the one to file a report on the situation.
