Sewage treatment facilities in
urban settlements, regulation of religious activities, including immersion of
idols in rivers, and community participation in cleaning rivers are needed to
control river pollution, said a new report from the environment ministry. The
Water quality of rivers at interstate borders report was published by the
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on its website last week. CPCB has been
monitoring the water quality of rivers at interstate borders since 2005 and is
currently monitoring it at 86 locations across India. The current report covers
83 locations across 40 rivers.
