The central government’s appeal to companies, spiritual
organisations and rich Indians abroad to partake of the cleaning up of the
Ganga, the river that is the life giver for the largest number of Indians, is
appreciable. In his budget speech this year, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley
had proposed that donations other than contributions under corporate social
responsibility to the Clean Ganga Fund by resident Indians shall be eligible
for 100% deduction. This arrangement has to be taken to the next level by
getting companies to involve themselves in project work.
