Power plants going green

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's recent green guidelines for thermal power plant serves as yet another indication of the Modi Government's commitment to sustainable development. Whether this will soothe the frayed nerves of environmental activists (and a host of vested interests who have taken the green cover to shoot at the BJP-led NDA regime), only time will tell. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office last May, he has been repeatedly criticised for causing unmitigated damage to the environment in his quest for economic growth; he has been accused of allowing the loot and plunder of our rivers and mines, of signing away on the destruction of our forests, mostly in the name of ‘development', which has suddenly become a dirty word, and occasionally for the sake of ‘national security'.
