The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change's
recent green guidelines for thermal power plant serves as yet another
indication of the Modi Government's commitment to sustainable development.
Whether this will soothe the frayed nerves of environmental activists (and a
host of vested interests who have taken the green cover to shoot at the BJP-led
NDA regime), only time will tell. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi took
office last May, he has been repeatedly criticised for causing unmitigated
damage to the environment in his quest for economic growth; he has been accused
of allowing the loot and plunder of our rivers and mines, of signing away on
the destruction of our forests, mostly in the name of ‘development', which has
suddenly become a dirty word, and occasionally for the sake of ‘national
security'.
