Thousands
of protestors across north India are expected to mass outside Jantar Mantar in
New Delhi on February 1 to press the government to clean up the
heavily-polluted Yamuna. Swami Vigyanacharya, who will be heading the campaign,
said the rally next month will just be a "warning" as this would
likely be "followed by a bigger demonstration onMarch 11".
"People in lakhs" are expected to turn up to support for the rally in
March, he said. The venue of the latter event has not been decided yet. Yamuna
Rakshak Dal (YRD), president of Jai Krishan Das, who has been mobilizing
activists and environment groups across the Braj region, said the protests were
necessary as the polluted river water is proving to be a threat to millions of
people living downstream of New Delhi.
