NGT orders chief secretary to ensure district officials implement order

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the state chief secretary to instruct subordinate officers in the district to assist the state power utility in cleaning up a river that had been polluted by fly ash.The directive follows police inaction against miscreants and a section of villagers who had resisted the clean-up of Chandrabhaga river in Suri, Birbhun as ordered by the tribunal. At the hearing on Friday, officials of Bakreshwar Thermal Power Station (BTPS), a unit of West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL), alleged that complaints to the police against miscreants obstructing workers from lifting fly ash from the river bed.
