India’s greenhouse gas emission to be low till 2031: Report

Source: The Hindu Business Line, New Delhi, Date: , 2009

The country’s per capita emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) will continue to be low until 2030-31, and it is estimated that the per capita emission in 2031 will be lower than per capita global emission of GHG in 2005, a new study released here on Wednesday shows. The finding forms part of the ‘India’s GHG Emissions profile: Results of five climate modeling studies’ released by the Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Mr Montek Singh Ahluwalia. The estimates of the five different studies show that the country’s per capita GHG emissions in 2030-31 would be between 2.77 tonnes and five tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. “Four of the five studies estimated that even in 2031, India’s per capita GHG emissions would stay under four tonnes of CO2, which is lower than the global per capita emission of 4.22 tonnes of CO2 in 2005. This would mean that even two decades from now, India’s per capita GHG emission would be well below the global average of 25 years earlier,” a statement issued points out. All the five studies show evidence of a substantial and continuous improvement in the country’s energy efficiency of GDP.
