Delhi Govt: Ban on plastic bags enforced successfully

Source: The Political and Business Daily, New Delhi, Date: , 2009

The complete ban on plastic bags may be far from reality but the Delhi Government has claimed that it has largely succeeded in eliminating the hazardous material from the National capital. In an affidavit filed before the Delhi High Court, the Government said that the notification forbidding the use of plastic bags has been successful and well-taken by the stake-holders in the city. "Plastic bags are gone and not found strewing all over Delhi anymore. This will greatly check choking of drains, killing of cattle and will help to preserve the environment," the Government said in the affidavit. further added that the notification forbidding the use of all kind of plastic bags is about 90 per cent successful in market places and it was possible only after the co-ordination by all the stake holders. The ban on plastic bags came into force in the city from January 7 following a notification issued by the Delhi Government at the instance of a High Court order. Giving details of measures undertaken to ensure elimination of plastic bags, the affidavit said there are over 175 alternate bag manufacturers in the city to supply jute, cloth and paper bags, thus creating a new environment.
