The Centre's ambitious plans to do away with landfill sites in 20 major cities, including Delhi, is being viewed with cautious optimism. The capital has for long been facing serious difficulties in dealing with the twin issues of collecting and disposing of municipal solid waste. While the civic bodies have taken some remedial measures, these have been half baked and haven't yielded much result. The hurdles in implementing the Centre's plan are three-fold: there is no spare land for dumping garbage; the existing ones are already in a critical state; and the corporations' initiatives related to waste-to-energy plants aren't exactly doing well. Senior officials told TOI that all the three corporations had recently signed an agreement with NHAI to utilise garbage for road construction project.
