Construction of wall around Bandhwari plant enough to prevent groundwater contamination, says MCG

Source: The Times of India, Date: , 2016

The MCG believes that constructing a wall around the defunct Bandhwari waste treatment plant is enough to prevent leachate from contaminating the groundwater. The civic body told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday that it had constructed a wall around the plant, but it got damaged due to monsoon rains, leading to seepage of leachate into the forest area. During the hearing, the MCG also told the green court that the wall around the plant is being repaired and it is removing leachate from the site. However, it was not able to give a clear answer over the reason for delay in starting the waste treatment plant. The civic body was also not able to explain the continuous formation of leachate and what solution it has to deal with the situation.
