Demand for ban on plastic bags gains momentum

groups and activists have urged the government to prohibit the use of plastic bags and wrappers following a High Court directive in this regard. A representation given by a practising doctor in Kochi pointed out that the ban would reduce the accumulation of solid waste, especially in Kochi Corporation areas.. The Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF) is also likely to raise such a demand before the government. The High Court had directed the State government to inform the court about a decision on the issue by September 30 after hearing all the stakeholders. In his petition submitted to the Chief Secretary, Saji Annie Oommen, a practising doctor from Poonithura, said that he could not shut his eyes to the alarming increase in diseases among the people due to pollution caused by the accumulation of solid waste, especially on account of the plastic bags. The solid waste management was one of the major problems faced by all the local bodies in the State.
